Operating Instructions
- The device turns on automatically, along with other elements promoting knowledge and entertainment in the MOTIO Center.
- A glowing laser dot within the circle indicates the device is ready for use.
- Choose a target point on the base’s surface.
- Adjust the weights on the branches so that the glowing tip points precisely at the selected spot.
- To repeat the activity, select a different target point.
Interactivity
The task of balancing the system is usually performed by a single person, though collaboration is also possible. The exhibit demonstrates the physics concept of the center of gravity. The core idea here is that the center of gravity lies in an unexpected part of the system. Visually, the structure may appear unstable, yet once displaced, it either remains still or gently wobbles around its equilibrium. The activity requires focus, dexterity, precise handling, and fine motor skills.
Educational Value
Guiding an airplane to the runway, balancing a motorcycle or bicycle, placing a pole in pole-vaulting in the right spot to launch upward, just a little to the right or left, slightly up or down – precision aiming is key. Success depends on foresight, quick assessment of the current result, a solid plan, a steady hand, and a bit of patience. Not everything follows a straight path. It’s like negotiation: subtract here, add there, shift something, change your perspective.
This exhibit offers a playful lesson – an engaging blend of basic mechanics and a safe laser source acting as a navigation beam. The Laser Balancer is primarily designed for solo operation, but a thoughtful dose of teamwork can be a welcome enhancement.
